Our Story
Britt/Makela Group is committed to addressing climate change through strategies that connect people, the environment, and building energy use. Founded in 2001, BMG engages in cross-cultural engagement and energy code development training, education, and analysis to positively impact communities and the land. Our work reflects a family commitment to bettering the world in which we live as we collaborate and supply resources to support increased building efficiency and sustainable communities.
BMG’s clientele is a testament to our versatility and expertise. We have successfully served a wide array of stakeholders, including renowned entities such as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, state energy offices, private industry manufacturers, the US Department of Energy, international governments, the International Code Council, and non-profit building science and advocacy groups. Collectively, we have worked across the United States, the Pacific Islands, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. In each scenario, we recognize both the shared and unique challenges and work with local stakeholders to create impactful solutions.
Initially based on the skills and commitment of an energy code expert and an environmental/land use planner, today’s BMG has a broader scope of technical and communication skills to increase our impact and benefit clients. Our founding partners met as environmental studies students at Sonoma State University and were married in a nearby redwood grove. Together, they have nurtured a spirit of generosity and environmental consciousness, caring for both the people and the land. As parents and environmentalists, they have devoted their lives to modeling community and relationship-driven work. As their children, we hope to carry their torch and strive to embody their convictions as the second generation of the Britt/Makela Group, continuing to assist clients in developing frameworks that seamlessly integrate codes, sustainable design, stakeholder engagement, and local building practices.
